KeywordLuv, CommentLuv and DoFollow – Give And You Will Receive…

Dofollow KeywordLuv, CommentLuv and DoFollow Give And You Will Receive...A while back I wrote a couple of posts on DoFollow, CommentLuv and KeywordLuv to let you all know that I had installed these plugins to “share the link love” and give back to my avid readers and commentators. I also wrote an earlier post about proper commenting to get backlinks to your site by commenting on the right blogs – the ones with DoFollow, CommentLuv and KeywordLuv.

Well, there have been hot discussions about whether by having these Plugins on your site you are actually “draining” your own site of “link juice”, because every link from commentators going out might take away a little bit of authority (link juice) from you, and therefore hurt your PageRank in Google. Nobody seems to be really sure whether these plugins do actually hurt your own site or not. That’s why so many bloggers are very hesitant about installing them. Also, there is the issue about possible spam comments – people are scared that these plugins might invite the spammers to leave tons of inappropriate comments for you to deal with.

Guess what – a couple of days ago my mind was put to rest about the whole issue. Because, to be honest, I wasn’t quite so sure myself whether these plugins were good for my blog or not. Want to know what I discovered?

For the last 6+ months my blog has been a PR2. A few days ago Google did an update of PR’s, and my site went up to a PR3! I think that speaks for itself. I have had so many comments over the last few months, and all of them are DoFollow and have links pointing back to the commentators site, and what happened? My blog went UP in PageRank!

This has proven to me that by having these plugins installed and by actively encouraging others to interact with me on my blog I have added value to it, and somebody else seems to be thinking the same ;) . As for the spam comments – yes, I do get more than before, but I have Akismet installed and it’s been protecting me pretty well. Also, I still do approve all comments myself, so there is no problem there.

So, to me it is clear – if you give, you surely shall receive! Now I hope that this post will inspire some of you to do the same…

@Dave, been to your blog and commented on Micro Niche Finder. Great looking blog, and you are going up in Alexa rank, too! About the “loadsa moolah” – it’s really funny, but this blog is not making me any money at all, to be honest. People in the Internet and Affiliate Marketing Niche don’t care much about clicking on other people’s Adsense ads, and are mostly looking for useful information. Which is fair enough, but it proves to me that sometimes the sites that cost you a lot of work can end up making no money, and others that you set up once and then leave alone can trotter on to earn you a little income for a long time (my site about Beach Decor is my biggest earner).

I agree completely with you, the more you give, the more you get ;-) For me the biggest problem are the “human” spammers that just leave a vaguely relevant comment in the hope for a backlink, I must confess it depends a lot on my mood how reliant I am with those ;-) Sometimes I approve them, sometimes not, but in general I haven’t regretted of having installed the plugins you mentioned on my own blog! You always get spammers, dofollow or not dofollow blog, but sometimes a “borderline spammer” can become a real avid reader and a real member of your “blog community”, SY

@hospitalera, I have the same problem with “human” spammers, and just like you it depends how I feel whether I approve or not. I have started to mostly disapprove simply because I am starting to get sick of similar comments all the time. It is also not very interesting for my readers to have 50 of nearly the same “great post, thanks for sharing” comments per post.

I like these plugins a lot. Not only is the functionality very helpful, but it also sets expectations of both the blogger and the commenter.

Whenever I visit a blog and I see Commentluv in use, it makes me feel that the blogger appreciates good comments. Specifically if I have something to say that is of value, the blogger has at least thought enough to provide a keyword-rich signature. From the blogger’s standpoint, I also think that it communicates a willingness to reward commenters to a point….

I personally think that there is nothing wrong with giving a DoFollow link if the comment actually adds to the discussion.

If someone is spamming you and the comment has no relevance to the original post then they shouldn’t get a link for it and as the blog owner you’d have to monitor your own comments to make sure none slip through.

I think Google in particular tries to control us by making us think that by linking out we’ll lose “link juice” and fall foul of their guidelines. For you though, it seems the opposite has happened. Probably because of all the links to your site from other places telling people that your site is DoFollow!

All my blogs are do follow and if Google don’t like it, they know where they can go….

Am I supposed to comment just on sites/blogs that are similar in nature to my two, or is it a benefit to me to comment on all blogs?

Thank you for the hardwork you put into your blog to teach us. These plugins are really a wonderful, powerful tool to help us work smarter-not harder and is in fact working for us.

I will be by another time to post a link from my other website, with your permission.

Kevin, it is always of benefit to comment on all blogs, whether they have these plugins or not. In fact, I would consider it selfish if you only look for the blogs with the plugins. Sure, you can predominantly try and focus on the blog that will give you the backlinks, but give the other bloggers a chance, too.
You can always create links in between your sites, it’s actually a good thing. I leave links to other posts of mine within the same blog quite regularly, it’s good for SEO.

    Hello Petra,

I found you through the KeywordLuv page at Blog Catalog. There is yet another new debate raging across the Web regarding whether dofollow comments are good or bad for PR.

I comment in many of them and provided examples of sites and specific posts with huge numbers of links that have hundreds of dofollow comment links and are still PR3.

I personally do not believe that dofollow is bad for PR and I also do not believe PR is all that important. Although links from high PR pages ARE effective, relevant links from high quality sites are more important than the PR of each page.

I have a list of DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv blogs in the post I’ll feature in CommentLuv in this comment. I am seeking assistance to make sure that all DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv blogs get included with multiple links to their optimum anchor text.

Thanks for adding these great plugins to your site! I’ve added them to a few of my sites as well and have seen great results. They are a great way to bring people to your blog and benefit the posters at the same time so everyone wins! The only problem I’ve run in to is the occasional spammer but Askimet with WP has done a pretty good job of keeping them under control. Thanks again!

    P.S.

    Petra Weiss Reply:

DoFollow will remove the “nofollow” tag from a link so that when Google crawls the site it will actually “see” the link and put value on it. If it has “nofollow” attached, Google won’t “see” it so it will be useless in SEO terms.

Petra, by installing keywordluv and commentluv plugins on your blogpost, you have definitely increased the interaction between commenters and bloggers. Of course you will still be getting your fair share of spammers. But I’m sure it will be worth it if a good portion of those who spam become truly interested and make it a point to avidly read your posts and increase your readership.
