The more people you follow, the more will follow you. Also, if you provide interesting and resourceful tweets, your following will increase.
You can leave links in your tweets to some of your blog posts or pages, they will not be dofollow but they will bring you more visitors.

Having a twitter badge will make our blog stand out? Yes but I don't think it'll make anyone's blog stand out...if they don't have good content...no one would want to follow them. Correct?

Also I am amazed how much people go crazy about twitter, but yes a blogger should have twitter badge because people are mad about twitter and it can be good to make lots of fans through it.

Yeah...and as people above me have already said it...It's definitely one of the great ways to get traffic so that's why it's one of the most useful tools out there. But one has to promote in a way which doesn't annoy their followers or atleast those who've started to follow newly :)

For businesses, to promote their business on twitter is a tough ask, they've to market their business very well on it so that they don't turn people off.

@Cali, you are not expected to read what all the people that follow you say. For me, whenever I log in to my Twitter account, I only scan the first site and see whether there is anything or anybody on there that interests me. I am quite sure that most people do it that way. But that also means that your tweets will not necessarily be read that much - unless you have got a real big following. The more people follow you the more will see your tweets and the higher your chances of getting them read. It's all a numbers game.
